Tenses and Aspects of the Verbs


             Good day everyone! How are you? By the way, this time I will share to you the topic that I  learned in our class discussion and it was clearly discussed by my professor. So, let us begin.

Tenses and Aspects of the Verbs

Simple Tenses

Past Simple Tense

Present Simple Tense
Future Simple Tense

-point in time in the past.
Ex. I ate breakfast this morning.

- general statement
-habitual truths
Ex. I eat breakfast   every day.

- A point in time in the future.
Ex. I will eat breakfast.



Continuous tenses (length of time)

Past Continuous

Present Continuous
Future Continuous 
-Actions that happened in the past when another action happened.
Ex. I was eating breakfast when my brother arrived.
- happening now
Ex. I am eating breakfast.
- length of time in the future
Ex. I will be eating breakfast from 9:00 to 9:30.


Perfect tenses (point in time before another point in time)

Past Perfect
Present Perfect
Future Perfect
-Action in the past before another past action.
Ex. I had already eaten breakfast when my brother arrived.
          (had+PP)
- Action in the past before the present moment.
 Ex. I have already eaten breakfast.
(There is no specific time compare to past simple.)
- Action that will be happens in the future before another action.
Ex. I will have already eaten breakfast by the time my brother arrives.
(will+have+PP)


Perfect continuous tenses


Past Perfect Continuous

Present Perfect Continuous
Future Perfect Continuous

-Action happening for a length of time up to the moment of another action happened.
Ex. I had been eating breakfast for 30 minutes when my brother arrived.

- Action that was happening for a length of time up to the present moment.
 Ex. I have been eating breakfast for 30 minutes.

- Action that will be happening in the future for a length of time up to the moment when another action will happen.
Ex. I will have been eating breakfast for 30 minutes by the time you arrive.
